Tschechien 2007

Moldavite

A more industrial field trip lead me to the Czech Republic and we visited the porcelain and glass industry there. Also a part of the trip was a Kaolinworkings and the process to finally get the quality for porcelain. An example for the czech gem industry was a garnet mine and a cutting facility. But of course we also visited geologic phaenomens like the basalt organ were nice basalt collumns reach high into the sky. For me one of the highlights of this field trip was the search for moldavites. But I guess we weren’t trained enough because we missed moldavites were our companions from the Czech Republic found one. The formed from the impact in the Nördlinger Ries not far away in southern Germany. The rocks there were vaporized and later on, like rain, condensed and droped here in this region. The nice, bizarr forms developed due to weathering and solution caused by ground water. It is told that there have been rich japenese business men which traded there new Mercedes-Benz sports car against a nice pice of moldavite.
