… ist verloren. Klingt schon etwas pessimistisch. Oder vielleicht realistisch? Die EU Wahl ist ja schon wieder etwas her und irgendwie fand ich waren die letzten Monate in Bezug auf das Klima nicht sonderlich berauschend. Mal sehen wie die weltweiten Proteste am 20.9. so laufen und was als Reaktion darauf passiert…

Es brennt in der Arktis und in den Tropen. Klimaforscher erkennen neue Einflüsse die vorher noch nicht berücksichtigt wurden. Es wird gepredigt wir müssen JETZT etwas tun, aber es passiert eben nicht viel. Auf dem Staaten Level keifen sich dich Anführer eher an und fordern Entschuldigungen für Lapalien anstatt gemeinsam nach einer Lösung zu suchen. Aber auch weiter unten bei den normalen Menschen herrscht Unverständnis. Europa versucht zu helfen und wirft mit Geld nach den Problemen. Die Menschen vor Ort fühlen sich angegriffen und vielleicht auch zu Recht. Denn es ist ja ihr Land und sie wollen dass man das respektiert. Wir versuchen uns einzumischen und oftmals gelingt uns das nicht auf eine Art und Weise die verständnisvoller aufgenommen wird. Insgesamt wäre es am wichtigsten eine Denkweise zu erreichen an der alle beteiligt sind und alle verstehen, dass es nicht um Länder und Grenzen geht sondern um die Erde als Ganzes und davon gibt es nur eine einzige.

Global ist Europa eben winzig. Wir rühmen uns damit, dass wir so fortschrittlich sind und schon so viel tun. Dabei vergessen wir immer wieder, das hier ja kaum noch Industrie ist. Wir importieren die fertigen Sachen und exportieren den Müll. Da kann man dann leicht sagen, dass Europa “sauber” ist. Das ist genauso zynisch wie einige Bürgerinitiativen gegen Öl oder Windkraft. Zum einen fährt man Auto, und oft auch noch nicht mal ein kleines, zum anderen will man aber nicht dass der Treibstoff vor der Tür gefördert wird. Das Gleiche gilt natürlich für Elektrizität. So lange die Herstellung, Förderung und der “Dreck”  woanders stattfindet ist alles wunderbar. Dann braucht man sich nicht um die Folgen zu kümmern sondern kann fröhlich konsumieren. Sobald das aber vor der eigenen Haustüre stattfindet ist es plötzlich nicht mehr ok.

Insgesamt gibt es sicher einen willigen Teil der Bevölkerung der versucht auf ein Auto zu verzichten und bewusster einzukaufen. Im Moment versucht ja auch eine wahrscheinlich bekannte Schülerin aus Schweden mit einer großen Kampagne mehr Menschen davon zu überzeugen. Wollen wir hoffen dass es klappt. Allerdings wird das alles zu viel Zeit brauchen. Immerhin gibt es ja noch viele andere Länder auf der Erde die mit anderen Themen beschäftigt sind und wo das Thema Klima noch keinen so großen Stellenwert hat. Selbst bei uns wird die Thematik ja oft genug durch “unwichtigen” Mist verdrängt. Die Klimamodelle haben sicher auch noch nicht jedes Detail berücksichtigt. Es wird schwer alles genau vorher zu sagen. Ich denke jedoch, dass wir den Wandel nicht mehr aufhalten können. Dafür waren wir zu lange inaktiv und haben uns vom Konsum treiben lassen. Und jetzt sind wir immer noch zu träge um mit Ach und Krach auf das Bremspedal zu treten.

Vielleicht sollten wir schon anfangen unsere Energie darauf verwenden Pläne für die Folgen zu entwickeln. Damit wir vorbereitet sind wenn es dazu kommt und Landstriche langsam unbewohnbar werden. Ist natürlich nicht so einfach, denn die Veränderung geht ja zwar Erdgeschichtlich schnell aber doch eher in Jahrzehnten. Vielleicht können wir ja auch aus der Erdgeschichte etwas lernen. Wahrscheinlich tun das ja einige Wissenschaftler auch schon. Es gab ja schon viele Warm- und Kaltzeiten auf der Erde. Was ist denn jeweils passiert als sich eine Warmzeit wieder in eine Kaltzeit gewandelt hat? Lag das nur an der Kontinentalverschiebung oder kam es zu einem Massenwachstum bei den Pflanzen oder oder oder. Genauso wie es beim jetzigen Wandel zu einer Warmzeit zu unvorhergesehenen Effekten kommt, kann es ja auch dann umgekehrt passieren. Dann ist es vielleicht zu spät um unsere ganzen Städte zu retten die am Meer gebaut wurden. Vielleicht können wir den Planeten aber wieder freundlicher gestalten wenn wir verstehen was in vergangen Zeitaltern zu einem Wechsel hin zu einer Kaltzeit geführt hat.

Unser größtes Problem ist wahrscheinlich dass wir sesshaft geworden sind und an dem festhalten was wir kennen. Das wird aber nicht mehr klappen. Die Erde wird sich verändern und wir müssen uns darauf einstellen. Besser wir bereiten uns jetzt schon darauf vor als dann wieder hinterher zu rennen. Da die Veränderung so schnell geht haben alle Bewohner der Erde sehr wenig Zeit sich darauf einzustellen. Dazu gehören neben den Menschen auch die Tiere und Pflanzen.

Hier in Deutschland gibt es ein Waldsterben aufgrund der Trockenheit in den letzten Jahren. Wie wird sich der Wald darauf einstellen? Robustere Arten setzen sich durch die mit weniger Wasser klar kommen. Etwas Ähnliches wird wohl auch im Tierreich passieren. Nicht jede Art wird dort überleben können wo sie im Moment heimisch ist. Einige werden migrieren und andere wohl aussterben. Letztendlich müssen auch wir eine Lösung finden…

Und noch ein Wort zum Schluss. Das Bild ist mit www.windy.com ^[1] entstanden. Eine echt sehr hübsche Seite die alle möglichen Informationen zur Atmosphäre grafisch sehr schön darstellt. Da kann man sich z.B. auch die Luftqualität ansehen. Abgebildet sind aber die Windströmungen. Hat schon fast einen Touch von Van Gogh 🙂

Tja ich muss sagen die letzten Tage und auch Wochen haben meine Stimmung in Bezug auf das Klima wieder etwas gehoben (siehe letzter Beitrag ^[2]). Es gibt immer mehr Leute die sich damit beschäftigen und seit den Schülerprotesten mit Fridays for Future und dem Youtube Video von Rezo über die CDU und andere Parteien ^[3], kann ich mir sogar wieder vorstellen, dass es noch etwas Hoffnung gibt. Vielleicht erreicht er mit dem Video noch ein paar mehr Leute und bringt sie zum nachdenken. Jetzt müsste das alles nur noch auf der ganzen Welt so laufen. Ich bin gespannt wie die Wahl morgen verläuft.

Wenn ihr mit der neudeutschen coolen Sprache klar kommt, dann schaut euch das Video ruhig an. Er spricht einige interessante Themen an. Ich selbst kann aufgrund persönlicher Erfahrungen die Grünen nicht wählen, allerdings gibt es ja noch andere 🙂

Das ganze Wachstum Wachstum Wachstum, Wachstum über alles wird trotzdem noch eine interessante Herausforderung… Vielleicht brauch es ja doch nicht so viel Wachstum die ganze Zeit.

Zusätzlich ist halt auch noch die Komunalpolitik auf dem Land, zumindest bei mir daheim, der letzte Witz und man kommt sich vor wie in den 70ern, wobei ich die gar nicht erlebt habe… Sollte nur eine Anspielung darauf sein, dass sie nicht mehr zeitgemäß ist. Vielleicht dazu mal ein anderer Beitrag. In der Stadt läuft es schon sehr viel moderner.

Ein nettes Video ^[4] was hoffentlich etwas zum Nachdenken anregt. Im Prinzip schießt es in ein sehr ähnliches Lager wie mein Kommentar zum Klima ^[2]… Ich hab die Plantagen ja auch in Liberia damals gesehen. Natürlich ist es nicht nur Palmöl oder Kautschuk sondern auch viele andere Sachen die wir hier konsumieren die aber woanders produziert werden. Oft leider ohne Rücksicht auf Verluste. Regionale Produkte hinterlassen auf jeden Fall keinen so tiefen Abdruck für die Umwelt. Deswegen würde es auch helfen nicht auf jeden “(Gesundheits)-hype” aus Übersee aufzuspringen. Mit heimischen Sachen kann man auch gesund leben. Beim Palmöl kommt eben noch hinzu, dass es mittlerweile fast überall drin ist und deswegen ist auch der Bedarf so unglaublich hoch. Selbst wenn man darauf achtet ist es nicht so einfach Palmöl zu vermeiden. Vor allem nicht ohne zusätzlichen Aufwand. Aber es lohnt sich darauf zu achten 🙂

A well made video which hopefully brings people to put some thought into environmental protection. Very similar to my last post about our climate ^[2]… In Liberia I’ve seen those plantations myself and they are huge. Of course it is not only about palm oil and rubber but about many other things that we consume here but which are grown somewhere else. Often regardless of consequences for the environment and the people there. Regional products are much better in that regard but not as fancy. I think it would help a lot to not jump on every health-hype-train from overseas that companies are trying to sell to us, for profit. We can live well and healthy with local products as well. Otherwise, how would the people have survived 100 years ago? The special thing about palm oil is, that it is used for so many products. That’s why the consumption and demand is so high. Even when you are trying to avoid products with palm oil, it takes some effort to find those.

Palmöl haben damals selbst die kleinen Leute in Liberia hergestellt und verkauft, weil es eben einträglicher war wie die Früchte selbst zu benutzen. Sie versuchen ja auch nur zu überleben und passen sich eben an. Wenn es aber halt große Konzerne tun und dafür dann Kilometer große Plantagen anlegen dann drängt sich mir oft ein fader Beigeschmack auf. Die wenigsten werden dabei auf Nachhaltigkeit achten. Sie nutzen die laschen Kontrollen in den Ländern einfach gnadenlos aus. Die Zerstörung ist ja dann eben wieder nicht vor der Haustür, sondern schön weit weg.

Even the local farmers in Liberia in the little villages produced palm oil to sell it. For them it was worth more that way than to use the fruits for themselves. I don’t blame them, they just do what they have to do to survive. If big companies do it, with kilometre long plantations, there is always a foul taste to it somehow. Possibly there are a few who really care, but most of them just do it for profit and don’t care much about the environment, people or country. They are probably from far away and just make use of the slack control system in those countries for their own gain. After all, the destruction is again not on their doorstep but far away, so who cares? We should and also have to care!

All in all I think I’m not an environmental activist who wants to conserve every bit of Earth like it is, but I have my opinion about it. What I don’t like at all is e.g. the climbing on all sorts of geological monuments. There are plenty of other walls and mountains you can climb. Why destroy the prettiest ones by climbing and walking on them all the time?
On the other hand I also don’t understand why construction projects, that are already on their way, are stopped, because some biologists found a not so common bug on one of the trees that were to be cut down. To me that tastes more like they were trying to find some logs to throw into peoples legs there.
Also when nature starts using artificial structures after we started using them again, I don’t think we have to stop using them because of that. After all it looks more like the animals did’t care much about us or only migrated there because we were using that structure in the first place.
This goes on of course. And in the bigger picture, I don’t think we should cut down more and more forest to make new plantations, we cut down enough already. Maybe we should think more about reusing old plantations instead of making new ones. Nature grows back of course, but it will take decades to grow back to the state it has been. Especially China was expanding a lot in Africa while I was there, and their deals are often not very pleasant I presume.

So zum Schluss vielleicht noch ein paar Worte… Ich denke nicht dass ich zu den Umweltaktivisten zähle, aber ich habe meine eigene Meinung darüber. Was ich überhaupt nicht mag ist zum Beispiel die ganze Herumkletterei auf geologischen Monumenten. Es gibt genügend andere Stellen an denen man genauso gut klettern kann. Warum suchen sich die Leute die schönsten aus und machen diese kaputt?
Auf der anderen Seite kann ich aber auch nicht verstehen, warum Bauprojekte, die schon im vollen Gange sind, gestoppt werden, weil auf einem der Bäume ein Käfer gefunden wird der nicht so häufig vorkommt. Für mich klingt das eher danach, als ob ein paar Aktivisten den Leuten da Knüppel zwischen die Beine werfen möchte.
Auch kann ich nicht verstehen, wenn wir aufhören müssen unsere eigenen Bauwerke zu nutzen, weil ein paar Tiere sich dort erst angesiedelt haben, nachdem wir diese wieder in Betrieb genommen haben.
Das könnte man so weiter spinnen. Im Gesamtbild denke ich aber, dass wir eben mehr darüber nachdenken sollten alte Plantagen wieder nutzbar zu machen anstatt neue zu schaffen. Natürlich wächst auch Urwald wieder nach, aber es dauert Jahrzehnte, oder länger, bis er wieder zu seiner ursprünglichen Form zurückwächst. Vor allem China hat sich während ich in Afrika war ein paar eher fragwürdige Deals dort ausgehandelt.

Well it‘s been in my head for a while, and since it seems that since the 1.5 degrees proposal ^[5] by the IPCC ^[6], more people are talking about it, I finally got to bring myself to write down my thoughts about it.

First of all. I‘m pretty sure we won‘t be able to meet the requirements for the 1.5 degrees warming. Here is why I think so:

The main part probably is because we do too little too slow, all of us.

We also mostly don‘t think about Earth as something we should take care of together, but we think within boundaries. Starting with myself and my family, but on to cities, states and countries or continents.

Furthermore I think that these studies don’t grasp the complexity of the climate on Earth and are not emphasising the urgency to change enough. We need to act NOW, not in 10 years.

Also there are many other problems on Earth which most of us regard as more important. Then the climate and nature have once again lost the attention they deserve. E.g. Trumpi wakes up one day and thinks that he should be in the headlines once again. And he will, because most people will listen to what he says, because of the position he is currently in. And it is not only him. I’m not that sure, but I guess in Germany, during the last elections, environmental protection didn’t even make it to the top three or even five key topics of the different parties.

Politicians always talk a lot, but in the end not enough is done. Maybe because there are deals with the economy or because they just love babble with little result. Mostly the first part probably. E.g. Germany just recently managed to negotiate a deal, within the EU, that makes it once again easier for car makers and their engines. Instead of 40% they only have to produce 35% less emissions in the next years. Of course jobs are always a nice bargaining chip for the economy. The list goes on. German coal power is still very strong, because of course they needed something to replace the fission power plants. However much more could have been done in terms of wind energy. Then again who sits in the supervisory board of most energy companies? You guessed it, politicians that moved on.

But it is easy to blame it all on them. When something is finally planned that would help in that respect, there are initiatives against it, because it shouldn‘t happen in front of „my“ door. Well wake up people. Whatever is in front of your door will change. It can either be an ugly ass wind power plant now, or a changing landscape over time. You might not or only in part experience that, but your children will.

As long as we use and rely on things that use energy in some way to make our lives easier, but are not really necessary we will loose that battle.

Leaf blowers are just one ridiculous example… They make a lot of noise and produce emissions compared to a simple rake. And we use them just because it is easier and looks a bit “cleaner” afterwards. Many examples could be added here.

If we keep thinking like that I think we deserve nothing else than our big cities along the coast drowning in the sea.

Some people also think that fusion plants will save Earth. I admit they sound very nice. But I guess until they are working well enough, it is already too late. And even then there are enough companies wanting to make profit in any way. Possibly selling the older, dirty tech to “less advanced countries”. Now we are back to point one. This way the EU might be “clean” one day and maybe even in time. But what about other countries? We won’t save Earth by using clean stuff and thinking clean thoughts within our boundaries but selling the dirty stuff outside of them. Think globally.

On Youtube there are a lot of animations covering all sorts of aspects of the climate change on Earth. Rising sea levels, melting ice bodies, average temperatures. I like one of them ^[7], which I’d like to share. It is about temperature, but a few countries have been picked to show it based on those countries. I just discovered that very recently. Before that I was always looking at another one. The link to that is below the new one.

The change is too slow for many people to think of it as important. In summer, on hot days, more people will complain about the heat. But then they just buy an AC and use even more energy. Only once it is too late and the drowning of Hamburg can’t be stopped any more, once they are faced with the result of it all, will they be willing to do something on their own. But the wheel can’t be turned back as easily as it would have been to stop it in the first place.

I don’t really think it will be a big problem for Earth. Earth experienced quite some hot climates during its existence. Flora and Fauna will also change. It will be a problem for us Humans however. We will have to adapt to the change, and I’m not that sure if we will manage, with all our boundaries included in the game. But there are so many other things tied to this which can’t be imagined now I guess. Who knows, maybe the result will even be an united Earth population like in Star Trek. At the moment it looks like they will be standing on a barren Earth though.

All of that not only counts for emissions of course, but for many other things like plastic. Before the oil and plastic, it was fine to use paper bags. It was fine when other people touched your apples in the store. It’s not like they will be bad afterwards. After all you can always wash them when you get home. Possibly in a decade or two there is so much plastic waste on Earth that it is already part of our food chain like it is for fish already. Who knows if plastic is not the top notch disease then?

I guess it would help a lot to think TWICE.

Think twice before you order “that stuff” ONLINE instead of buying it in a local store. You might not get exactly what you wanted, but you helped the environment & sometimes even your local community.

Think twice before you use the car to drive to the fitness centre to work out. It would be even good for you to actually use your bike to get there.

Think twice before buying even more useless toys that use energy, from companies that want to sell all sorts of crap just to make profit.

The growth, growth, growth principle, above all else won’t work for much longer, if we want to preserve what we have.
