Diplomarbeit

Die Geländearbeit «» the field work

Because I never took part in an exchange programm or studied abroad it was clear for me very early to do my diploma thesis abroad at least. If possible even outside of europe. At first I asked my professor of structural geology, Paul Bons, if he still has connections to Australia, because he worked there before he came to Germany. But he didn’t sound very positive at first because of funding problems. I than wrote applications to Japan and New Zealand asking for an oppertunity to do my thesis there. But the answer wasn’t positive as well. There was no funfing for foreign master students. I should ask again if I want to do a PhD. Shortly after the letter from New Zealand arrived, my professor called me and told me there was an oppertunity to do a diplomat thesis in australia now. He found a company willing to found a project there. Well he or better we should do a structural and lithological mapping there for them and during that time we could also take some samples for further investigation. They are exploring for uranium there at the moment but no detailed mapping was ever carried out in that region. For me it was clear that this was my chance and I took it.

Location of Arkaroola

The area is located in the Flinders Ranges, approximatly 600km north of Adelaide in South Australia. The small holiday village, a former sheep station, next to it is called Arkaroola. The kind owners are called Margaret and Douglas Sprigg, the let us work on their land. The company Marathon Resources funded our work there, in return we had to carry out the mapping and draw the map for them along with a short report. During the mapping we also collected samples for my diploma thesis.

The trip lasted from october till december 2007, afther that there were two month to write the report and draw the map for the company. At the moment I’m occupied analyzing the other samples.

In general the uranium deposit is a hydrothermal deposit which experienced many different fluid flows. Our interest and my job is to find out which minerals were deposited by which fluid, when, and what was the source of the fluid. Furthermore there is an insteresting dyke called “Pebble Dyke” whicht cuts the whole area. It looks more like a conglomerate or tillite but it is found in the basement. If we solve its mystery remains unlcear.

During my stay there I took many photos of course. Also of my last real holiday week at the end of the field work and my trip to Brisbane there are many pictures. I visited my friend there and we went to Moreton Island, the third largest sand island in the world. It was really wounderful. We also visited the glass house mountains whicht are similar to the Hegau in southern Germany.

I also wrote a traveling report or story, unfortunatelly it is still only available in German. Maybe I’m able to translate it in a few weeks or month… If your are still interested you can download it as pdf from here: Australienbericht 2007 (in German)

Das Gesamtwerk «» the final thesis
